The largest annual celebration in southeastern Kansas has come a long way since its beginning in 1919 as a way to keep playful pranksters out of mischief on Halloween night. For one full week, Neewollah entertains people from all walks of life, and Independence, a town of around 11,000, becomes a city of over 80,000. Neewollah offers musical stage shows, queen competition and coronation, carnival, concessions, street acts, artists alley, and top performers in the entertainment world, such as Blood Sweat and Tears and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

This 124-acre showcase comes complete with facilities and equipment for the joy and entertainment of young and old alike. Inflation has had no impact on the cost of rides at Riverside Park...its still just a nickel for the carousel and a quarter for the miniature train. Additional facilities include a miniature golf course, shelter houses, and Shulthis Stadium, which is the location of the first lighted night game every played in organized baseball.

Adjacent to Riverside Park, the Ralph Mitchell Zoo residents include sun bears, buffalo, monkeys, cougars, a swan pond, caimans, eagles, and a flock of tame peacocks that roam the grounds at will. Miss Able, the first monkey in space, was born at the zoo.
